What Is EVO ICL? 

ICL stands for Implantable Collamer Lens. The surgery is done by creating an incision in your cornea through which a lens can be implanted between your iris and natural lens. This approach can treat: 

  • Myopia: Nearsightedness
  • Astigmatism: An irregularly shaped cornea or lens

The EVO ICL Surgery

EVO ICL can be placed during a quick, 30-minute procedure. Prior to surgery, Dr. Liu will dilate and numb your eyes to keep you comfortable. Once the anesthetic has taken effect, she’ll make a small cut at the base of your cornea. Through that tiny opening, she’ll insert the lens and place it behind your iris and in front of your natural lens. The incision is so small that stitches aren’t required.

A Closer Look at the Lens

The lens used during this surgery is unique because it has a tiny hole in the middle that lets fluid flow freely. Before this advancement, your surgeon would need to make tiny holes in your iris to prevent fluid from building up behind the artificial lens. Additionally, the EVO ICL is composed of plastic and collagen to ensure a lens that is flexible and feels natural. 

What Are the Risks?

EVO ICL surgery is very safe. However, as with any surgery, there are risks. Potential complications include infection, bleeding, and swelling. More serious complications are very rare and may include vision loss and retinal detachment. Are You a Candidate for This Surgery?

  • Are between the ages of 21 and 45
  • Have a stable prescription that hasn’t changed in one year

Choosing Between ICL and LASIK

At Beach Cities Laser Vision, we can help you choose between LASIK and EVO ICL. Both options are safe and low-risk and have a high satisfaction rate among our Torrance patients. With that said, here are a few things to keep in mind when considering your options:

  • As a general rule, ICLs work well for people with thin corneas, severe nearsightedness, and chronic dry eye. 
  • When we place ICLs, we don’t have to remove corneal tissue. The lens also offers UV protection to shield your eyes from damage. 
  • LASIK can’t be reversed because it changes the structure of the eye, whereas ICLs can be removed if necessary.
  • We tend to recommend ICLs for patients up to 45 years of age.
