What Is LASIK?

LASIK is one of the most popular types of laser vision correction. It’s performed to correct vision problems caused by refractive errors, including:

  • Myopia: Nearsightedness
  • Hyperopia: Farsightedness
  • Astigmatism: An irregularly shaped cornea or lens
  • Presbyopia: Age-related vision loss

LASIK at a Glance

LASIK surgery involves reshaping the clear front part of the eye, called the cornea. This process improves the way that light focuses on the retina at the back of the eye, so that you can see clearly without glasses or contact lenses.

In many cases, LASIK can help you achieve 20/20 vision or better, and the surgery has a very strong safety record. Complications are rare, and side effects are mild and clear up quickly. If you’re in good general health and ready to see clearly without corrective lenses, LASIK in Long Beach & Torrance, CA may be an option for you.

The Benefits

Improved Vision

After LASIK, you can expect to see more clearly and sharply than you did before. This can make it easier to read, drive, play sports, and perform other daily activities.

Reduced Risk of Certain Eye Diseases

Laser eye surgery can help reduce the risk of certain conditions, including cataracts.

Quick and Painless Procedure

LASIK takes less than half an hour to complete, and most people experience only mild discomfort during the experience.

Easy Recovery

Most people are able to return to their normal activities one to two days after surgery.

High Satisfaction Rate

LASIK produces long-lasting and predictable vision correction. Our LASIK patients report a higher quality of life and high levels of happiness after their procedures.

The LASIK Surgery

Before surgery, Dr. Liu will take detailed measurements of your eyes and perform a complete exam to assess your overall eye health. During surgery, you will lie comfortably on the operating table, and we’ll administer drops to numb your eyes. Once the drops have taken effect, Dr. Liu will make a flap in your cornea. She’ll then raise the flap and reshape the corneal tissue to provide the refraction you need to see clearly.

What Are the Risks?

In general, LASIK eye surgery is a very safe procedure that is appropriate for most of our Long Beach patients. Some potential risks include dry eyes, infection, and difficulty seeing at night.

In very rare cases, serious complications may occur, which can result in vision loss or changes to your visual acuity. During your private consultation, Dr. Liu will review these risks with you and help you weigh the benefits and drawbacks.

Is LASIK Right for You?

During your initial consultation for LASIK eye surgery in Torrance, Dr. Liu will check the health of your eyes, measure your cornea and pupils, and evaluate your refractive error. This exam will ensure that you have a refractive issue that can be resolved with LASIK and that your corneas are thick and healthy enough for the surgery. In addition, you should be:

  • 18+ years of age
  • Realistic about your expected results from the LASIK procedure
  • In good general health

Will I have 20/20 vision after LASIK?

While we can’t predict your unique outcomes without an exam, many of our Torrance patients achieve 20/20 vision after LASIK. In addition, most patients are able to drive, watch TV, play sports, and more without using corrective lenses.

Is LASIK painful?

We use anesthetic eye drops to ensure that the LASIK procedure is completely comfortable. As such, most of our patients report that LASIK is not painful at all. After the procedure, your eye may feel irritated for a few hours, but this should clear quickly.

How long is the recovery?

Recovery from LASIK is relatively brief. Most patients are able to resume their normal daily activities the very next day. You’ll notice an improvement in your eyesight within the first 24 to 48 hours, and your vision will keep sharpening over the next several months. You’ll need to use your prescribed eye drops to promote comfort and healing during the first few days, and you may need to avoid swimming and contact sports for several weeks.
